Alexandra Palm

Archontophoenix alexandrae

The Alexandra Palm, also known as the King Palm or Northern Bangalow Palm, is a tall, graceful palm native to Queensland's coastal tropical rainforests. It features a clean, swollen trunk, a bright green, smooth crownshaft, and large feather-like fronds with silvery-white undersides. During summer, it produces large branches of small white flowers followed by attractive red berries. It is a highly popular landscape tree for pools and gardens across Australia.

Native Origin & Climate

Wet tropical rainforests, swamp forest swamps, and stream banks along the eastern coast of Queensland.

Expert Pruning Tip

Like the Bangalow Palm, it is self-cleaning. Let dead fronds detach and fall naturally to avoid trunk scarring.

Easy Care. Fast-growing and low-maintenance once established, requiring only water and occasional native palm fertilizer.

Sunlight Diet

Full sun to part shade. Younger palms prefer some protection from harsh afternoon sun, but mature trees thrive in direct hot sun.

Moderate to High. Requires regular watering during summer dry spells. Handles wet feet better than most palms and appreciates mulching.

Rooting Terrain

Moist, organic-rich, well-draining soil. Can adapt to sandy soils if watered regularly.

Atmosphere

Prefers warm, humid climates, but once mature it can adapt to cooler subtropical areas. Protect from frost when young.

Multiplication

Propagation is done by seed, which germinates readily in warm, moist conditions.
