Hen and Chicken Fern
Asplenium bulbiferum
Asplenium bulbiferum, commonly known as the Hen and Chicken Fern or Mother Spleenwort, is a popular Australian and New Zealand native fern featuring soft, feathery, pale green fronds. Its unique common name refers to the tiny bulbils (chickens) that sprout along the upper surface of its mature fronds (hens). These bulbils grow small roots and eventually drop off to grow into new ferns, making it a highly fascinating plant to observe.
Native Origin & Climate
Wet sclerophyll forest understories, dark rainforest gullies, and creek beds of eastern Australia and New Zealand.
Expert Pruning Tip
Trim old, brown, or dry fronds near the base of the plant to encourage new growth. Avoid cutting fronds that are actively carrying healthy young bulbils.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Beginner Friendly. Easy to grow, much more tolerant of dry air and temporary neglect than other delicate ferns.
Dappled shade to bright indirect light. Never expose to direct sunlight, which will bleach and shrivel its delicate foliage.
Moderate to High. Keep the soil consistently damp but not waterlogged. Water as soon as the top layer of potting soil begins to feel dry.
Rich, highly organic, moisture-retentive but well-draining soil. A mix of 50% peat moss, 30% organic compost, and 20% perlite works well.
Cool to warm, humid environments. Performs exceptionally well outdoors in temperate and subtropical regions of eastern Australia.
Highly unique. Simply remove the small sprouted bulbils from mature fronds and press them gently into moist soil to root.
Arching, feathery, and delicate. Bright green, lace-like fronds covered in tiny plantlets create a highly decorative, organic texture.
Ideal for shaded garden beds, damp corners, bathrooms, hanging baskets, or sheltered patios.
Versatile Sheltered
Safe:Non-toxic to pets and humans. A very safe option for households with pets or young children.
