Bird's Nest Fern
Asplenium nidus
Asplenium Nidus (Bird's Nest Fern) is a proud Australian native fern found in temperate and tropical rainforests of eastern Queensland and New South Wales. Naturally growing as an epiphyte on tree branches, it forms a large, vase-like rosette of glossy, apple-green, strap-like fronds with wavy margins and a dark, prominent central rib, mimicking a bird's nest.
Native Origin & Climate
Humid, shaded rainforest canopies of coastal Queensland and eastern New South Wales. Enjoys warm coastal Australian conditions.
Expert Pruning Tip
Cut away old, brown fronds near the base of the crown. Never prune the central growing crown (the nest), as it is highly sensitive to damage.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Beginner Friendly. Hardier and more tolerant of dry air and temporary dry soil than Maidenhair or Boston Ferns.
Bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Protect from direct afternoon sun, which will instantly bleach and shrivel the glossy green fronds.
Moderate. Keep the potting mix damp but not soggy. Avoid watering directly into the center of the rosette (the nest), which can cause rot.
Very free-draining, organic mix. A blend of 60% premium indoor soil, 20% peat moss, and 20% orchid bark or perlite replication.
Enjoys warm temperatures and moderate-to-high humidity. Thrives in Sydney and Brisbane. In dry winter rooms, use a humidity tray.
Sowing spores. It is slow and complex to divide, so purchasing small potted specimens is standard practice.
Architectural, tropical, and soft. Large rosettes of glossy wavy leaves that create a dramatic focal point on tabletops.
Warm bathrooms, shaded patios, verandas, or bright tables out of direct drafts from air conditioners and heaters.
Versatile Sheltered
Safe:Completely non-toxic to cats, dogs, and children. A safe and native choice for any Australian family home.
