Silver Lady Fern

Blechnum gibbum

Blechnum Gibbum, commonly known as the Silver Lady Fern, is a structural dwarf tree fern native to the warm islands of the South Pacific. It forms a neat, symmetrical rosette of bright green fronds atop a short, fibrous trunk, bringing a stylized tropical look to shaded gardens and patios.

Native Origin & Climate

Humid, subtropical rainforests of Fiji, New Caledonia, and Pacific Islands. Highly suited to warm, humid areas of eastern and northern Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Snip off old, brown fronds at the base close to the trunk to encourage fresh growth and maintain a clean, neat shape.

Botanical Blueprint

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Easier to grow than many delicate ferns; tolerates occasional dry spells better than maidenhairs.

Sunlight Diet

Part shade to deep shade. Enjoys bright, indirect light indoors. Avoid direct midday sun which will burn the fronds.

Thirst Level

Moderate to High. Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water thoroughly when the surface of the soil starts to feel dry.

Rooting Terrain

Rich, organic, well-draining soil. Combine premium potting mix with 20% peat moss and 10% perlite to lock in moisture while draining well.

Atmosphere

Appreciates high humidity. Keep misted indoors during dry summer days, and protect from dry winter heaters and frosty outdoor nights.

Multiplication

Spores. Mature clumps may also develop side offsets which can be carefully sliced off and potted up in spring.

Form & Vibe

Symmetrical, arching, and palm-like. A compact crown of narrow, bright green fronds forming a mini tree silhouette.

Perfect Placement

Bright, humid bathrooms, protected outdoor courtyards, shaded patios, or under forest canopies.
