Cat Palm

Chamaedorea cataractarum

Chamaedorea Cataractarum, commonly known as the Cat Palm or Cascade Palm, is a popular, trunkless clustering palm native to southern Mexico. It forms a dense, bushy mound of glossy, dark green fronds. Excellent for purifying indoor air, it brings a full, tropical forest understory vibe to homes and offices.

Native Origin & Climate

Wet riverbanks and streams in tropical Mexico. Highly suited to damp, bright indoor spaces and shaded outdoor areas in Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Trim off fully yellowed or brown lower fronds close to the base with sharp garden shears. Wipe leaves occasionally to keep them dust-free.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Simple to grow, but requires more consistent moisture than some other indoor palms.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light. Can tolerate medium light levels, but growth will be slower. Direct sun will scorch the leaves.

Thirst Level

Moderate to High. Unlike many house plants, it does not like dry soil. Water when the surface of the soil feels dry; keep soil evenly moist.

Rooting Terrain

Rich, moisture-retaining, well-draining potting soil. A high-quality indoor mix with added coco coir and perlite works perfectly.

Atmosphere

Appreciates high humidity. Keep misted in dry weather, and protect from air conditioning drafts and freezing winter winds.

Multiplication

Division. Carefully divide root clumps of mature plants during spring repotting.

Form & Vibe

Dense, bushy, and fountain-like. A trunkless cluster of dark green arching fronds arising directly from the root base.

Perfect Placement

Bright corners of living rooms, offices, entryways, or shaded outdoor patios.
