Parlour Palm
Chamaedorea elegans
Chamaedorea Elegans (Parlour Palm) is a small, slow-growing palm native to the dense, shaded rainforest understories of Southern Mexico and Guatemala. Highly popular since Victorian times, it produces clusters of slender, bamboo-like stems topped by delicate, arching, light-green pinnate fronds, bringing a soft tropical vibe to tight spaces.
Native Origin & Climate
Damp, shaded rainforest understory of Central America. Well-adapted to indoor environments and lower-light spaces in Australia.
Expert Pruning Tip
Cut old, dry, or yellowing fronds close to the soil level. Avoid cutting the top growing stems, as this stops the palm from producing new fronds.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Beginner Friendly. Resilient and highly tolerant of typical indoor environments, including lower light levels and air conditioning.
Medium, filtered light or moderate shade. Avoid direct sun, which will instantly bleach and shrivel the delicate fronds. Copes well in dim rooms.
Low-to-moderate. Water thoroughly when the top 3-4cm of soil is dry. Avoid keeping soil constantly wet or letting the pot sit in water.
Rich and very free-draining. A standard premium indoor potting soil mixed with 20% coarse perlite and 10% sand works perfectly.
Handles average indoor temperatures and dry air. Protect from freezing winter temperatures and cold, direct draft currents from air conditioners.
Sowing seeds. It is slow to propagate, so purchasing small clusters of young palms is the standard methodology.
Soft, bushy, and elegant. Feathery, light-green arching leaflets on slender stems. Perfect for adding a soft texture to shelves.
Tabletops, desks, bedroom corners, or bathrooms. An excellent low-light indoor performer for apartments.
