Spider Plant

Chlorophytum comosum

Chlorophytum comosum, commonly known as the Spider Plant, is an extremely popular and resilient houseplant native to southern Africa. It features a rosette of long, slender, arching green leaves variegated with creamy-white stripes. It is famous for producing long, wiry stems (stolons) carrying small white flowers and hanging baby plantlets ("spiderettes") that look like tiny spiders, making it ideal for hanging displays.

Native Origin & Climate

Forest floors and shady river banks of South Africa.

Expert Pruning Tip

Trim brown leaf tips using clean scissors, following the natural angle of the leaf. Clip hanging baby plantlets if you want to propagate them or keep the parent plant tidy.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Virtually indestructible and highly adaptable. Excellent for first-time plant owners.

Sunlight Diet

Bright indirect light to medium shadow. Can handle minor direct morning sun, but direct summer afternoon sun will bleach and burn the leaves.

Thirst Level

Moderate. Water when the top half of the potting mix feels dry. Tolerates occasional dry periods well due to its thick, water-storing tuberous roots.

Rooting Terrain

Standard, well-draining potting mix. A standard premium indoor mix with a handful of perlite is perfect.

Atmosphere

Highly adaptable. Thrives in average home temperatures and humidity, handling dry indoor air. Keep away from direct drafts.

Multiplication

Extremely easy. Cut the hanging spiderettes and place their bottom base directly into water or moist soil; they root rapidly.

Form & Vibe

Arching, grassy, and cascading. Narrow striped leaves and hanging babies offer a playful, retro mid-century modern look.

Perfect Placement

Ideal for hanging baskets, high shelves, tabletops, or windowsills where the babies can hang down gracefully.
