Rabbit's Foot Fern

Davallia fejeensis

Davallia Fejeensis, widely known as the Rabbit's Foot Fern, is a unique epiphytic fern native to Fiji. It features delicate, lace-like green fronds and distinctive, furry creeping rhizomes that crawl over the sides of the pot. Resembling furry rabbit feet, these rhizomes absorb moisture and nutrients.

Native Origin & Climate

Tropical forest canopies of Fiji and Pacific Islands. Highly popular indoors and on shaded patios across Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Trim away old or brown fronds at the base. Do not prune or bury the furry creeping rhizomes, as they are essential for the fern's health.

Botanical Blueprint

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Hardier and more tolerant of dry air than many other fern varieties. Enjoys hanging pots.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light. Avoid hot direct sun, which drys out the furry rhizomes and burns the delicate, lacy fronds.

Thirst Level

Moderate. Keep soil lightly moist. Water when the soil surface begins to feel dry, and mist the furry creeping rhizomes regularly.

Rooting Terrain

Very porous, well-draining potting mix. A blend of standard potting soil with 30% orchid bark and 10% perlite mimics its natural tree-dwelling habitat.

Atmosphere

Appreciates moderate to high humidity. Protect from freezing winter nights and dry winds from heating and cooling vents.

Multiplication

Rhizome division. Carefully cut a section of creeping rhizome with at least one or two fronds attached and pin it to moist potting mix.

Form & Vibe

Lacy, spreading, and whimsical. Feathery green fronds with woolly, light brown creeping roots wrapping around the container.

Perfect Placement

Hanging baskets near bright windows, humid bathrooms, or shaded balconies in warm weather.
