Rubber Plant

Ficus elastica

Ficus Elastica (Rubber Plant or Rubber Tree) is a robust, handsome indoor tree native to eastern parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia. Boasting thick, leathery, glossy oval leaves that range from deep forest green to dark burgundy, it grows quickly and adds a strong, masculine, structural element to interior design.

Native Origin & Climate

Tropical rainforests of India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Malaysia. Thrives in warm, subtropical climates in coastal Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

To control height and encourage branching, prune the top of the main stem in spring. Wear gloves, as the plant releases a sticky white latex sap.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Hardier and more tolerant of dry air and inconsistent watering than the Fiddle Leaf Fig. A great choice for indoor tree lovers.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light. Can handle a few hours of direct morning sun. Avoid deep shade, which will cause the leaves to lose their dark burgundy color and turn dull green.

Thirst Level

Low-to-moderate. Water thoroughly when the top 50% of the soil is dry. Copes well with dry spells. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

Rooting Terrain

Very well-draining potting mix. A blend of 70% premium indoor soil and 30% perlite or pumice works beautifully to keep roots aerated.

Atmosphere

Adapts well to indoor humidity levels. Safe in dry, air-conditioned rooms, though it enjoys occasional misting. Protect from frost.

Multiplication

Stem cuttings or air-layering in spring. Dip cuttings in rooting hormone and place in a warm propagation mix under high humidity.

Form & Vibe

Structural, upright, and bold. Broad leathery dark-red and green leaves that give it a highly glossy, modern aesthetic.

Perfect Placement

Living rooms, office entrances, dining areas, or bright bedrooms. Keep away from cold winter windows and drafty doorways.
