Fiddle Leaf Fig
Ficus lyrata
The Fiddle Leaf Fig is a highly popular, statement-making houseplant famous for its large, heavily veined, violin-shaped leaves. Originating from tropical West African rainforests, it has become an iconic feature in Australian modern interior design. It requires a stable environment and a bit of attention to thrive, but rewards growers with its stunning structural presence.
Native Origin & Climate
Tropical West African rainforest canopy. Thrives in warm, humid climates like coastal Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
Expert Pruning Tip
To encourage branching, pinch off the growing tip of the main stem in spring. Wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth every fortnight to remove dust and maximize photosynthesis.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Intermediate. Requires a consistent care routine, stable lighting, and protection from drafts. Not recommended for total beginners, but rewarding for those willing to monitor soil moisture.
Bright, filtered light. Ideal placement in Australia is near a large East or West-facing window. Protect from harsh, direct mid-day summer UV rays, which can quickly sunburn the foliage.
Moderate. Water thoroughly only when the top 3-5cm of potting mix is dry. Typically needs watering every 7-10 days in summer, but reduce to every 3-4 weeks in southern Australian winters (VIC, TAS, SA) when the plant is dormant.
Extremely free-draining. Use a premium indoor potting mix blended with 20% coarse perlite and 10% orchid bark to prevent root rot. Ensure the pot has large drainage holes.
Prefers warm temperatures (18°C–27°C) and moderate-to-high humidity. Grows easily in Sydney and Brisbane coastal climates. In dry inland regions or heated/air-conditioned spaces, mist regularly or use a pebble tray.
Stem cuttings or air-layering in spring. Cuttings root well in water or moist propagation mix when kept in a warm, bright spot.
Architectural and structural. Grows as an upright, bold tree with glossy, leathery leaves up to 45cm long. Adds height and scale to interior spaces.
Bright living rooms, office corners with natural light, or sheltered, warm verandas. Avoid drafty areas near air-conditioning vents or heaters.
Indoor
Toxic:Contains a milky, white sap (latex) that causes skin irritation on contact and gastrointestinal distress if ingested by pets or children.
