Swiss Cheese Vine

Monstera adansonii

Monstera Adansonii, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Vine, is a popular trailing or climbing houseplant native to Central and South America. It features charming, heart-shaped leaves with distinct, naturally occurring oval holes (fenestrations) that resemble Swiss cheese. Very fast-growing and easy to train.

Native Origin & Climate

Tropical rainforest canopies of Central and South America. Highly popular indoors across Australia, climbing poles or trailing from baskets.

Expert Pruning Tip

Trim leggy vines in spring or summer to promote bushier growth. The cuttings can be easily rooted in water to expand your collection.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Fast-growing and resilient. Easier to care for than many other fenestrated plants.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light. Can tolerate medium light, but holes will be smaller. Avoid direct sun, which can burn the foliage.

Thirst Level

Moderate. Water when the top 3-4 cm of potting mix feels dry. Tolerates dry soil better than overwatering.

Rooting Terrain

Peaty, chunky, well-draining soil mix. Combine standard potting mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss.

Atmosphere

Enjoys humidity but adapts well to average indoor levels. Keep warm (above 15°C) and away from cold drafts.

Multiplication

Stem cuttings. Take a cutting with at least one node and root it in water or moist sphagnum moss.

Form & Vibe

Climbing or trailing vine. Heart-shaped leaves with iconic leaf holes, growing quickly along slender green stems.

Perfect Placement

Hanging baskets, high shelves, or climbing up a coco-coir pole in a warm living room.
