Moonstones

Pachyphytum oviferum

Pachyphytum oviferum, commonly known as Sugar Almond Plant or Moonstones, is a charming succulent native to Mexico. It is easily identified by its extremely chubby, egg-shaped, round leaves that resemble polished smooth pebbles. The leaves have a beautiful pale blue-grey, lavender, or light pinkish tint and are covered with a thick powdery coating of epicuticular wax (farina) that protects them from the hot sun. In winter, it produces arching red flower stems with small bell-shaped flowers.

Native Origin & Climate

Rocky cliffs and steep mountainsides of San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Expert Pruning Tip

Pruning is rarely required. Only remove dead or dried leaves at the bottom of the stem. Be careful not to touch the leaves, as the powdery wax coating easily rubs off and leaves unsightly fingerprint marks.
