Snake Plant

Sansevieria trifasciata

Sansevieria Trifasciata (also known as Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law's Tongue) is an incredibly hardy evergreen succulent native to tropical West Africa. Featuring upright, sword-like, dark-green leaves patterned with silvery-green banding, it is virtually indestructible, thriving on neglect and adapting to almost any light level.

Native Origin & Climate

Dry, rocky tropical West African grasslands. Perfectly adapted to indoor environments across all parts of Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Pruning is rarely needed. Cut away damaged or completely yellowing leaves at the very base of the soil with a sharp, sterile blade.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Extremely low maintenance. The ultimate choice for frequent travelers, dark rooms, and forgetful waterers.

Sunlight Diet

Highly adaptable. Prefers bright, indirect light (can handle full morning sun), but tolerates deep shade and fluorescent office lighting remarkably well.

Thirst Level

Very Low. Allow the potting mix to dry out 100% before watering again. Water monthly in summer, and every 6-8 weeks in winter. Overwatering will cause root rot.

Rooting Terrain

Ultra-fast draining. Use a cactus and succulent specialty potting mix, or mix standard potting soil with 40% perlite, pumice, or clean river sand.

Atmosphere

Extremely tolerant of dry air, air conditioning, and winter heating systems. Keep indoors in frost-prone southern AU regions, as it dislikes freezing temps.

Multiplication

Division of rhizomes or leaf cuttings. Division is easiest and maintains the yellow variegation borders (cuttings revert to solid green).

Form & Vibe

Architectural, modern, and structural. Upright erect leaves provide high-impact vertical lines, perfect for tight spaces.

Perfect Placement

Bedrooms (it releases oxygen at night), hallways, dark office corners, or sheltered outdoor balconies in subtropical regions.
