String of Pearls
Senecio rowleyanus
Senecio Rowleyanus (String of Pearls) is a unique, trailing succulent vine native to the dry, rocky deserts of Southwest Africa. Boasting slender cascading stems lined with green, marble-like spherical leaves (which act as water reservoirs), it trails beautifully over hanging planters and shelves, looking like a green bead necklace.
Native Origin & Climate
Dry, shaded crevices of Southwest African deserts. Thrives in warm, dry indoor spaces and protected balconies in Australia.
Expert Pruning Tip
Trim the trailing stems to maintain a neat length. Cuttings can be pressed back onto the top soil of the pot to create a thicker, bushier crown.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Intermediate. Highly sensitive to overwatering and poorly draining soil, which will cause the pearls to rot and shrivel.
Bright, filtered sunlight. Enjoys 2-3 hours of direct morning sun, but protect from harsh Australian midday summer sun, which will sunburn the spheres.
Very Low. Stores water inside its succulent pearls. Allow the soil mix to dry out 100% before watering again. Typically every 2-3 weeks in summer, monthly in winter.
Ultra-fast draining mix. Combine cactus/succulent specialty mix with 30% perlite and 10% sand, or mix standard potting soil with 50% coarse perlite.
Adapts well to dry indoor air and air conditioning. Dislikes damp, soggy climates. Protect strictly from cold winter frosts.
Stem cuttings. Lay stem cuttings flat on damp succulent mix; roots will emerge from the nodes along the stem within 2 weeks.
Delicate, cascading, and decorative. Long slender green vines lined with spherical green beads. Adds high visual texture to shelves.
Hanging baskets, high kitchen shelves, or bright window sills. Ensure it is out of reach of inquisitive pets.
Indoor
Toxic:Ingestion causes drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Contact with the sap can cause skin irritation in children and pets.
